Description: Increased deregulation, cross-border activities of non-financial companies and improved information and communication technology have led to increased cross-border consolidation of financial institutions. The commercial banking sector in particular has seen a huge number of cross-border banking mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in recent years. The internationalization of banks has progressed at different rates and for different purposes. This study identifies these patterns of internationalization. Several motives are based on history. We therefore begin with a brief historical overview of internationalization after a more in-depth discussion of the various internationalization strategies that have been implemented by the banks.
